In Brazil, the most prevalent wood is Peroba Rosa (aspidosperma polyneuron – what a great name!).  This wood was used extensively for all types of infrastructure, both residential and industrial, during the first half of the 20th century. It is probably most well known in plank form (roughly 1” x 8”) because it was extensively used as siding and wall covering by the British during colonial times. However, the Fazenda Yone inventory has an rare and impressive list of unusually long, unpainted, well preserved timbers and beams.

Peroba is a very strong, dense wood. On the Janka Hardness Scale it is at 1,670 lbf, which places it harder than Oak, Maple , Teak and even Apitong, but not as hard as Cumaru or Ipe. This makes it durable wood with great potential in flooring and decking applications.

Peroba is a not only very durable and resistant to decay and insects, it is also a beautiful golden- rose color when surfaced. Peroba is probably most well known in North America for its distinctive, grey “elephant- skin” patina that sometimes develops upon exposure to the elements. This look, popular with some furniture makers and designers, actually represents a fairly small percentage of the surface textures that show up in “as-is” weathered Peroba.
