“As-is” is a term used in the industry to describe reclaimed wood with one or more of the faces left in, or at least close to, the original condition. Typically as-is wood is is minimally processed. At Elemental Republic, we generally remove visible metal, remove any decay or mechanical damage and scale back defects that can’t be cut out. Sometimes as-is material is cleaned, pressure washed, wire brushed or lightly sanded, but it is not not surfaced or milled. These processes create a clean, finish-ready surface, but leave the original patina intact. Depending on the age, source and species, “patina” can include any of the following characteristics: weathered grey, circular saw marks, band-saw marks, chainsaw marks, hand hews (adze or axe) marks, paint and time polished surfaces created by decades of use and wear.
