One of our favorite uses for reclaimed Teak is for covering vertical surfaces. Teak is great as flooring and decking, but when it is used for covering walls – interior or exterior- it is much more noticeable and seems to get appreciated more than in horizontal applications. The natural beauty of the wood and the reclaimed character combine to create a timeless, enduring and authentic aesthetic.
We recently completed a large order of Reclaimed Teak Paneling / Siding for a project in California. The client intends to use the same product for both interior and exterior vertical surfaces on their projects. The exterior surfaces will be allowed to weather to a natural grey patina, while the interior surfaces will be treated with a natural oil based finish to enhance the rich golden brown colors of Teak.
To produce this order we sourced good quality Teak beams and timbers from demolished industrial buildings. Wood that is salvaged from industrial or commercial buildings tends to be of a higher quality that wood salvaged from traditional houses and we make an effort to use material from these sources.
The order was for a full container of manufactured product. Whatever the size of the order, we have to locate and purchase almost twice the volume of raw material to produce a quality product. Because quality material becomes available only as the result of demolition projects, it sometimes takes several rounds of acquisition to get enough for an order of this size. Because of this we often have material in all phases of the production process during an order like this one.
We milled this paneling to a ¾” thick x 5 ¼” wide T&G product with a 3/16” reveal. The length structure was random lengths, 4’ and longer. The majority of the lengths were in the 6’10’ range.
We can produce a variety of siding and paneling products suitable for virtually any application. We can produce tongue and groove, shiplap, v-joint, reveals, or virtually any profile desired.
Exterior applications are often left unfinished to weather to the distinctive tone of grey that only Teak seems to obtain. Others choose to apply a finish with UV resistant properties to preserve the rich golden-brown hues of Teak. Interior paneling is typically finished with an oil-based product or sometimes a urethane. For interior applications thinner material is resource / cost effective and achieves the same durable beauty.
